An acetate, or lacquer, was an aluminium disc with a nitrocellulose lacquer coating; because the grooves were softer than a conventionally pressed record, the sound quality deteriorated by degrees each time it was played. Acetates were much used in the music business [1958] as the quickest and easiest means of distributing recorded sound.
